Shamarial Roberson, Florida Deputy Secretary for Health, stepping down

Florida Deputy Secretary for Health Shamarial Roberson – a veteran of the state’s fight against the COVID-19 virus – is stepping down from her post, a Department of Health spokesperson confirmed Tuesday morning.

As Florida continues to be an epicenter of COVID infections, her resignation temporarily leaves the department without another top leader.

A colleague, who asked not to be named, said Roberson’s leaving was her own decision, citing her desire to spend more time with her family after “essentially being on call 24/7” through most of the COVID-19 pandemic.

When the state was producing daily COVID statistical reports, for instance, Roberson supervised the staff compiling the data, which for them was an “all night job, every night,” according to the colleague and also confirmed by Health spokesperson Weesam Khoury.

In a written statement provided to the USA TODAY Network-Florida, Roberson said “serving Floridians the past eight years at the Department of Health has been the most rewarding experience of my career.

“Our teams have worked around the clock to not only respond to COVID-19 but promote and maintain public health statewide across all facets of our Department,” she added. “Together we have ensured Florida remains at the forefront of public health nationwide through grassroots and initiatives encompassing the entire state of Florida.”

Her last day is Oct. 14, Khoury said. Her future professional plans are as yet unknown.

Resignation follows that of Scott Rivkees

Tuesday’s news follows Florida Health Secretary and state Surgeon General Scott Rivkees saying he was stepping down after his contract runs out Sept. 20. That includes a three-month extension after his original two-year contract ended.

The deal allowed him to keep his full professor status and salary at the University of Florida, where he was chair of the pediatrics department at the College of Medicine and physician-in-chief of UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital.
